November Nor'Easter

November Nor'Easter
November 17, 2009 sandbridgehouses

Last week (Nov. 11-13th) Sandbridge Beach experienced one of the worst Nor’easters in recent years. The wind blew over 35 mph with gusts up to 70 mph for over 50 hours. I missed much of the storm (was out of town) but was updated with phone calls and facebook entries. I arrived today (Monday, November 16, 2009) and toured the beach. Amazingly ,the beach held up fairly well, in my opinion. This is due, in large part, to our past beach replenishments and sand dune development project. The highlight of the tour was certainly the 550ft long and four story high barge stuck in the surf next to the Little Island Pier. What a monumental job it will be to get that barge moving again.

It will take time to determine the full extent of the damage by the storm, and I will keep you posted as I learn more. One thing is for sure, everyone is busy with the clean up process.
