Kitty Hawk Wind Project: Brief for our community

November 22, 2023

Neighbors,
I’m sending the letter below just in case you have not already seen it through your SBCL membership or through the Next Door app. We owe great thanks to those who worked so hard on this effort, especially Gabriele Mack, Joe Bourne and John Spallone.

The City Council Informal Session cited can be seen at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jukomz_xpZw The relevant City Council discussion starts at time stamp 0:53:40 and Mrs Henley’s additional comments regarding the Dominion Energy project start at 1:03:03.

Dear Sandbridge Friends and Neighbors,

We are pleased to report that Virginia Beach City Council has decided against moving forward with Avangrid’s Kitty Hawk Offshore Wind Project and the proposed cable landfall in Sandbridge. This was communicated to Avangrid in a private meeting over the last week and was openly discussed by City Council during their Informal Session this afternoon. They highlighted the open issues associated with the project and Councilmember Barbara Henley noted the relief that this decision would be to the community. Please join us in thanking her for the help and support she provided on this important issue.

The Informal Session should be available on YouTube within the next 24 hours. The Avangrid update will be near the end of the meeting for those interested in hearing the full discussion. The topic was introduced by Mayor Dyer with comments from City Manager Duhaney, Vice Mayor Wilson and Councilmembers Henley and Schulman.

We will continue to monitor this development very closely and report any additional information as it becomes available. We hope to provide a more detailed update at the January SBCL meeting.

Thank you all for your determination, engagement and support in speaking out against this project. We have come a long way over the last year and we have done it together.

As we enter the holiday season, we hope this news adds a measure of joy to your celebrations.

Sincerely,

The Protect Sandbridge Beach Coalition
Joe, Gabriele and John

I hope this information is helpful. Happy Thanksgiving!

Dick
