Heat Wave: Tips to Beat the Heat!
July 22, 2011 sandbridgehouses

The majority of the country is currently experiencing one of the largest heat waves in recorded history this week, with temperatures in the 100s and heat indexes above 110. Sandbridge is definitely not excluded from the heat wave, with temperatures around 100 degrees and over 70% humidity making spending time outdoors very rough and dangerous. According to the National Weather Service, heat is number one weather-related killer in the United States. On average, excessive heat claims more lives each year than floods, lightning, tornadoes, and hurricanes combined. For that reason, we have compiled a list of ways to beat the heat with the help of the American Red Cross. Here it is:

  • Dress for the heat. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing. It is also a good idea to wear hats or to use an umbrella.
  • Drink water. Carry water or juice with you and drink continuously even if you do not feel thirsty.
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which dehydrate the body.
  • Eat small meals and eat more often.
  • Slow down. Avoid strenuous activity. If you must do strenuous activity, do it during the coolest part of the day, which is usually in the morning between 4 and 7 a.m.
  • Stay indoors when possible. If air-conditioning is not available, stay on the lowest floor out of the sunshine. Remember that electric fans do not cool they simply circulate the air.
  • Be a good neighbor. During heat waves, check in on elderly residents in your neighborhood and those who do not have air conditioning.

In addition to these tips, be cautious of your surroundings and watch out for warning signs. It is important that we all enjoy our time on the beach, or just outdoors, but make sure to follow these tips in order to make your experience in Sandbridge a safer one.
